Something else I neglected to mention earlier is that the gcc44
package probably isn't what you want for general development anyway.
We have gcc46 in r151004 and gcc47 in bloody.

Regarding the dependency issue, I posted some comments in
http://omnios.omniti.com/ticket.php/42#1493 .  Theo found that the
master makefiles  are hard-coding runpaths for libstdc++ which is the
source of the dependency.  Unfortunately the fix is too disruptive to
backport to r151004, but it should be fixed soon in bloody.  The fix
will probably also remain private to OmniOS, as the runpaths are
necessary for other distros that don't ship libstdc++.so.6.0.13 in
/usr.
