The fix via Joyent was:

  set pcplusmp:apic_timer_preferred_mode=0
  set apix_enable=0

Which iirc they were thinking about making default (not sure how far that got).

I'll update the wiki, though if it's safe to do so, might want to consider
setting those by default as well.

Loading KVM and reboot into a hang sort of stinks. :-)
