I was waiting a long time for illumian too, mostly for dpkg support. I 
think it's mostly in limbo right now, I've heard a few things 
unofficially but AFAIK there's been no official Nexenta statement on 
what's going on with it. Fortunately, the things other than dpkg that 
seemed attractive about illumian are also true for OmniOS -- actually 
used in production by a commercial entity with a strong interest in 
keeping it stable and addressing bugs/security issues along with the 
resources to do so... I just don't think the community is large enough 
yet for a fully community supported distribution to work at this point.
