What is the reason for needing a single IP?  Is it just a convenience
or is there a deeper technical reason?

Perhaps a VNIC on an etherstub would do it.  You'd need to use
forwarding from the crossover interfaces (and use a separate IP
network for those) to the VNIC, but that might be more straightforward
than bridging.
