I've had this on earlier OmniOS versions, with VMware Fusion 5.something. My solution was to install the tools with all the defaults, except 

        NO - VMware Host-Guest Filesystem
        NO - vmblock

This seems to avoid the crashes, while providing the functionality I care about. I suspect vmblock rather than the guest filesystem, so you could try installing that feature if it's important to you.
