Oh, my bad; I misunderstood. I popped open the case when I got home 
yesterday and tried shorting the physical NMI header, with the exact 
same results – the box just wedged hard. I also booted a linux livedvd, 
with the exact same outcome for both IPMI initiated and physical jumper 
shorted NMI's, the OS just wedged :(, so it doesn't seem an illumos 
specific problem.

I guess there's either a design issue with NMI generation on this 
specific board model, I've got a bum board, or something about my 
specific configuration is messing it up. Just for fun I'll try checking 
with supermicro support, but most likely I'll have to write off NMI 
crash dumps :(, unless something else looks wrong as I get further into 
the configuration process I don't think I want to try and RMA the board 
just for this.
