Out of curiosity, does it behave any differently if you use the native 
illumos rm rather than the gnu variant?

If I get a minute, I'll try to reproduce this. What exactly are you 
doing? Install ghc (ghc-7.6.3-src.tar.bz2), and then the platform 
(haskell-platform-2012.4.0.0.tar.gz)? I didn't see a standalone package 
just for cabal after a quick look.
