Yeah, once you get used to vim trying to use plain jane vi can be excruciatingly painful :). If you want it to behave exactly like your favorite linux distribution, you can copy over the linux vim global configuration file (typically /etc/vimrc or something like that) to your omnios box (where it looks like it wants it to be in /usr/share/vim/vimrc).
