012 isn't LTS.  It's a stable release that's going to be EOSLed in a matter of weeks.

So '012 installs, but '014 doesn't?  That it prompted you for single-user mode suggests something really odd.  "svcs -xv" would be useful in that case (though it will be verbose).

I'm not sure why the '014 installer didn't work, but if '012 DID install, you can follow the upgrade directions here:

after a successful '012 installation.
