There is work on a new GRUB-replacing booter system -- a port of the FreeBSD one -- underway in the community.  I'm not sure if that ALONE is sufficient to enable raidz booting on illumos & distros.  I suspect there's more, but I'll forward this to the author of the FreeBSD booter port, so I can find out if there's more.
