Did a pkg refresh --full
which gives this:
Changed packages:
omnios
  runtime/perl
    5.16.1-0.151014:20150402T192953Z -> 5.16.1-0.151014:20160301T161253Z
  runtime/perl/manual
    5.16.1-0.151014:20150402T193025Z -> 5.16.1-0.151014:20160301T161325Z
  service/network/ntp
    4.2.8.6-0.151014:20160127T163640Z -> 4.2.8.6-0.151014:20160301T160738Z
  system/zones/brand/ipkg
    0.5.11-0.151014:20150402T184311Z -> 0.5.11-0.151014:20160226T182222Z
  system/zones/brand/lipkg
    0.5.11-0.151014:20150402T184311Z -> 0.5.11-0.151014:20160226T182223Z
Services:
  restart_fmri:
    svc:/network/ntp:default

And voila no libssl. Was this the missing magic? Can I safely upgrade
now?
