Thanks Stefan, for your suggestion.
However, when I tried to build stuff using the OmniOS build scripts that are
available on github some weeks ago, I was unable to master the process; it
kept throwing errors at me and I was unable to find some decent,
to-the-point documentation to get on top of it.
That may be due to beginners error, but for me the learning curve was too
steep at the moment and I figured I had to go back to the "classic" Solaris
build procedure as described here, for example:

With that, I managed to build and publish a number of packages, so for the
time being I think I'll stick with that - unless someone has a _really_ good
starting guide for the github-way.

In the meantime, the suggestions as given by Thomas got me to solve my
tun/tap-issue - I'll reply to that separately.
