Fix it myself. Was not related to the controller switch but because
some of the disks needed to flag '-T permissive'. So handcrafted a
smartd.conf file instead of relaying on 'DEVICESCAN' adding the flag to
the needed disks solved the problem.
Error from smartd when this is needed:
Device: /dev/rdsk/c8t2d0s0 [SAT], ATA IDENTIFY DEVICE words 82-83 don't specify if SMART capable.
Device: /dev/rdsk/c8t2d0s0 [SAT], proceeding since '-T permissive' Directive given.
