There is in fact redundancy for essential elements of zfs, but just 
not for user data by default.  Additional redundancy for user data can 
be enabled.

There is little reason to believe that zfs on one disk is less 
reliable than some other filesystem on one disk other than with the 
other filesystem you might not know that your files have become 
corrupt.
