I have had good luck with equipment from DataOnStorage.com. Not
only reasonably priced and reliable, but they also sell a piece of
software (which does run on OmniOS) called OSM, which allows a
command line interface to identify (i.e. blinking lights) for the
enclosure and disks in the enclosure. Very useful when replacing a
    failing disk.

Other recommendations:

highly recommend using SAS over SATA disks

having 2 SAS cables connecting the JBOD to the server

use 6Gb/s SAS for everything (it has more reliability features
        than 3 Gb/2 SAS)

use LSI JBOD cards (such as the LSI SAS 9207-8e)

hope this helps,
