Here's how I set up a serial console on my X4150 and a test VM:

eeprom console=ttya
vi /rpool/boot/grub/menu.lst
# Un-comment the following lines:
serial --unit=0 --speed=9600
terminal serial
# Comment the line:
#splashimage /boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

I didn't mess around with services.
