My own experience with ProFTPd is that it requires a configuration 
file.  Does it have an equivalent default operating mode to wuftpd or 
will the switch inflict a need to reconfigure existing ftp service due 
to the update?

If it is not a true drop-in replacement, then I suggest supporting 
wuftpd as it is today but also offering (and recommending) use of 
ProFTPd as a non-conflicting installation.

ProFTPd does have an active mailing list and reasonably frequent 
releases.
