Hi John,

Thanks for the response, I appreciate the help.  Apologies for taking so
long to respond back, I got sick, then way behind at work.

That's actually a perfect example of the problems I'm having:  I'm a little
too ignorant,  and when I hit something I don't understand, generally some
bit of prerequisite knowledge that I don't have, there aren't a lot of
resources out there.  For example, in the recipe it says: "Munge
config.make link to add -shared". I honestly don't understand what that
means.  However, in your response you say "add -shared to the LDFLAGS"
 which seems to make perfect sense to me if I look at the configure line
from the recipe.  But I don't have the faintest idea how those 2 statements
are the same or related, so I didn't add -shared to anything because I
couldn't figure out what "munge config.make link" meant.

But if I add -shared to the LDFLAGS  and use the example configure command
in the recipe it throws the warnings:  WARNING: unrecognized options:
--disable-static, --enable-mini-gmp  and then bombs out with:

configure: error: cannot run C compiled programs.
If you meant to cross compile, use `--host'.

So it's entirely possible I still don't understand what I'm supposed to do
with -shared.  Or i'm doing something else wrong. Or i'm missing some
prerequisite I don't know about.  The set of things "I don't know about"
here is really large... :)
