You didn't perchance perform the update into an alternative boot
environment? If you did, you should be able to use grub to select the
previous pre-update boot environment to boot into to see if the updates
caused your problem. If you didn't update into a separate BE, this is an
example of why you should 8-/.

You could potentially use pkg off a boot cd to try and back out the
updates, but exactly how to do that I'm not sure of...
