Thanks Dan;  I've saved those commands in a script which hopefully I'll
be able to run if it happens again, via the serial port.

I was pinging from a machine on the same subnet;  it's just a simple
home setup here with two interfaces:  one connected to the ISP's cable
modem and the other to a hub/router and all the other machines, on the
192.168.1.0/24 subnet.

Maybe the diagnostics will reveal this to be the cause.
