You can't build illumos-gate just yet on omnios.  But unless you're dinking in specific subsystems, you can develop with illumos-omnios, then shuffle it over to illumos-gate for a last-minute OI build pre-integration.

I build illumos-omnios occasionally on my HDC's "omniti" zone.  make-clobber-to-full in <100 minutes (CPU bound with my low-power Xeon E3).
